The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup ( the
forerunner to the UEFA Cup ) was founded on 18 April 1955, two weeks
after the founding of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. The first Fairs
Cup involved teams from Barcelona, Basle, Birmingham,
Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Lausanne, Leipzig, London, Milan and Zagreb.
Started originally as a two year tournament by 1961 it had evolved into
an annual event. The 1971/72 tournament, was the first to be known as
the UEFA Cup. Over 100 clubs now participate.
The UEFA European Championship has seen ten winners: Soviet Union
(1960), Spain (1964), Italy (1968), Germany
(as the Federal Republic of Germany/West Germany in 1972, 1980 and as
Germany in 1996), Czechoslovakia (1976), France (1984, 2000),
