Below you will find my short list of
the best 12 thoroughbreds in the last 64 years and the year/s they
won ' horse of the year '. Of course this is very disputable
because it doesn't take into account the complexity of the ' Triple
Crown '.
Every Country has it's own series of three events that make up their own Triple Crown. For example...in the US the Triple Crown is represented by the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes...in Britian it is represented by the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, Epsom Derby, and the St. Leger Stakes...in Canada by the Queen's Plate, Prince of Wales Stakes, and Breeder's Stakes...in Ireland by the Irish Two Thousand Guineas, the Irish Derby, and the Irish St. Leger...and other Nations have their own Triple Crown's as well.

Secretariat ( Big Red ) is probably the most recognized name in thoroughbred horse racing in North America...Secretariat ( the prodigy of Bold Ruler and Somethingroyal ) won the 1973 Triple Crown and set two records in the process.
Kelso did not have the regal start that Secretariat had...and despite a slow start managed to win ' Horse of the Year ' a record 5 times ( and in a row ), smashing track records along the way. Though placed 4th by Blood-Horse Magazine in their list of the top 100 ( behind only Man o' War, Secretariat, and Citation ) it's debatable as to how much that has to do with his background more than his accomplishments.
Man o' War had earnings of $249,465...Secretariat had earnings of $1,316,808...Citation earnings of $1,085,760...and Kelso $1,977,896. You could argue that Citation, given the differnce in years, earned more than Kelso...but Kelso definitely out-pursed the other three.
