There are far too many varieties of  Martial Arts to try to dispense knowledge concerning them all or individually...so here we will concentrate on the main topic only...modern mixed martial arts ( UFC, IFL, Bodog, Hardcore, etc...style of fighting ). Modern Professional MMA evolved from, for all intense purposes, the efforts of Gastao Gracie in the early 1900's.

Carlos Gracie started and made famous the Gracie Challenge in the 1920's which usualy involved a Gracie fighting a larger opponent to showcase that their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was superior to other forms of fighting. Contrary to popular belief there was no winfall of cash to made from defeating a Gracie. The mythical winfall probably stemmed from a fight that never took place with Benny ' The Jet ' Urquidez ( 58-0-0 with 49 knockouts ), where they would both put up $100,000 on the fight.

UFC: The Beginnings

The UFC was founded by Rorion Gracie and Art Davie and the first UFC Event ( UFC 1: the Beginning ) was held on November 12th, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver. There was no weight classes, no judges, and no time limit...the competitors fought until they were submitted, knocked out, or tossed in the towel. Royce Gracie ( 14-3-3 ) won UFC 1. The winner was awarded $50,000.
In 2001 Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, and boxing promoter Dana White, purchased the rights to the UFC for $2 million. In 2004 Zuffa ( the UFC parent company created by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta ) recorded $34 million in losses; but by 2006, after the success of the Ultimate Fighter television show on Spike TV, UFC Unleashed, and Live UFC Fight Night, which increased interest in the pay-per-view market the UFC recorded $222,766,000 in revenue...more than both the WWE and boxing.
In March 2007 the UFC bought it's main rival organization PRIDE.
