Ignoring the detractors...golf was invented and introduced to the world by the Scots. In 1457 King James II of Scotland ordered a ban on golf and soccer because it was, as he said, interferring with military training, and later James III in 1471 and James IV in 1491 would follow suit on the ban of golf.
The first set of written rules was laid down in Edinburgh in 1744, and, for the most part, they are still the same basic rules applied today. In 1858 the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews set new rules/guidelines on how many holes would be played ( 18 ), and by the 1870's it was considered the standard.

In 1829 at what is now called the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club a hole cutter was invented which cut a hole 4.25 inches in diameter, and the lads at the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews decided in 1891 that that size would become the standard.
Like tennis, golf too would be suspended through the war years...of the three, then existing tournaments, the US Open and the PGA would suspend operations from 1917-18 and the Brits from 1915-19...and during World War 2 the US open from 1942-45, the PGA in 1943, the British Open from 1940-45, and the  relatively new Masters Tournament from 1943-45.

GOLF: The Tournaments

The First of the eventual ' Grand Slam ' tournaments was the British Open won by Willie Park in 1860. Then came the US Open in 1895 which was won by Horace Rawlins. Twenty-one years later the PGA was born in 1916 with Jim Barnes capturing the title. The Masters, which began in 1934, in which Horton Smith was the champion, finalized what would eventually become the men's  ' Grand Slam '.
The women's tournaments began with Babe Didrikson Zaharias winning the US Women's Open  in 1948. In 1955 the LPGA Championship took off with Beverly Hanson taking home the prize.
