The roots of American Football derive from rugby and soccer...the first ' football games ' seem to have begun at Princeton by students who called it ' ballown '. Over at Harvard, the freshman and sophomore classes competed in a football-type game, played on the first Monday of each school year; this event came to be known as ‘Bloody Monday’ because of the roughness of the game.  Soon after the end of the American Civil War, around 1865, colleges began organizing football games. In 1867, Princeton led the way in establishing some rudimentary rules of the game. Also in that year, the football itself was patented for the very first time.

Walter Camp was the general athletic director and head advisory football coach at Yale University from 1888-1914, and chairman of the Yale football committee from 1888-1912. Camp played football at Yale and helped evolve the rules of the game away from Rugby and Soccer rules into the rules of American Football as we know them today. Walter Camp edited every American Football rulebook until his death in 1925.

NFL: The Beginnings

The first league of professional football teams was the American Professional Football Association, formed in 1920. The American Professional Football Association formed the basis of the NFL in 1922; and in 1933, NFL officials adopted rules specifically for the NFL and discontinued the use of collegiate rules. In 1936 a halfback by the name of Jay Berwanger holds the distinction of being the very first NFL draft pick and the first Heismann Trophy winner. Texas based businessman Lamar Hunt established the American Football League (AFL) in 1960 as a competitor to the NFL. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10 in the very first Superbowl on January 15, 1967.
