Boxing ( aka pugilism ) is another one of those sports that you can't really determine a starting date or a Country of origin. So again we'll concern ourselves with the modern contests.
Modern boxing can be said to have started when in 1892 James J Corbett defeated John L Sullivan with a KO in the 21st round. James J Jeffries reigned undisputed from 1899 to 1905 and Jack Johnson regigned from 1908 to 1915. The next star came along in the likes of Jack Dempsey who was the undisputed champion from 1919 to 1926.

Joe Louis was the first real mega star, among both the white and black communities because of his likeable demeanor. And his reign was indictitive of his prowness in the ring, reigning undisputed from 1937 to 1949. A stretch that has never been equaled nor likely ever will.
From 1964 to 1970 only Muhammad Ali would hold the distinction of being undisputed ( 1964 and 1967 ). Between 1970 and 1978 the heavyweight title would see 4 boxers hold the undisputed title ( Joe Frazier 70-73, George Foreman 73-74, Muhammad Ali 74-78, and Leon Spinks 78 ), however...the title would remain disputed until Mike Tyson  in 1987 defeated Tony Tucker. The days of a fighter holding the title exclusively for more than a year or two were gone.

Boxing: The Lean Years

With the creation of more organizations ( WBC 1963, IBF 1983, WBO 1988 ) boxing has seriously  been affected both in the results and popularity of the game. The first modern organization was the NBA ( 1821 to 1962 ) which changed it's name and became the WBA in 1962. It's really hard to say that boxing will ever regain it's hey-day...and it has been lately over-shadowed by the increasing popularity of MMA...but...true to form boxing only needs one mega-star to come out of the woodwork to save it...for another few years, until the next drought. Then repeat the process...over and over again.
