Well there's no doubt or controversy about who invented Basketball...Dr. James Naismith adapted it from a game he played as a child called Duck-On-A-Rock. James Naismith moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891, after leaving as  McGill's Athletic Director in Montreal. While there he needed to create a game that allowed itself to be played indoors during the harsh winters.  The first game involved two peach baskets, a soccer ball, and a list of thirteen rules.

The YMCA helped to propel the sport into many communities and  by 1936 it was introduced at the Berlin Olympics. In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame ( Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame ).
The Edmonton Commercial Graduates dominated basketball throughout the 20's, 30's, and 40's...playing 522 games, winning 502 of them, and recording a winning streak of 147 games in a row...more amazingly was...they were a women's basketball team and played against both men and women teams.

NBA: The Beginnings

On November the 1st, 1946 the first ever NBA game was played when the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens...both teams were part of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.
From 1967 to 1976 the NBA had a rival organization called the American Basketball Association kicking at their heels and lasted for 9 full seasons...competing for players, fans, and media attention...in 1976, the ABA's last season, 4 teams from the ABA joined the NBA ( New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs ).
